It’s an honour for me to perform at the Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival 2018 and to present my tribute to Mark Murphy. I regard Mark as one of the all-time great jazz singers and had the good fortune to see him live, performing, in Surfers Paradise, of all places back in the 1970s. The venue was The Mark Night Club, no longer in existence, and I was working at The Penthouse Night Club, just across the road on Orchid Avenue, with George Almanza on piano and Jeff Wallace on drums. We took an extended break to catch one set of Mark, who was just fantastic.
Mark Murphy, 14/3/1932 – 22/10/2015 was the recipient of the Downbeat Magazine readers poll for best male vocalist of the year in 1996, 1997,2000 and 2001 and was nominated for 6 Grammy Awards for best male vocal performance. He wrote the original lyrics to the Oliver Nelson tune, Stolen Moments which I’ll be singing, along with some of his other classics at the festival.
